Preparing for an EEG

Sleep

Get one-half of your normal amount of sleep the night before the test. Do not get more than 4 to 5 hours. You may drive yourself to the hospital, but have someone else drive you if you are feeling too fatigued. If you decide to have someone else drive you, do not sleep on the way to the hospital. This is especially important for infants and children.

Meals

For best results, eat meals the day of the EEG. Infants and young children should eat meals at least one hour before EEG. Please DO NOT eat or drink any caffeinated products at least 12 hours before EEG.

Medications

Please continue to take all medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Hair

Your hair must be clean and dry. No braids, hair weaves, permanent hairpieces, barrettes, hairspray, mousses, or gels.
