Chaplaincy Services

Chaplaincy Services are provided by Chaplain Eric Stenman and volunteer chaplains. The chaplains endeavor to be available to patients, families, and friends, as well as to the Hospital staff, and the larger Hanover community. The chaplains listen to people’s personal stories and honor them as individuals with a unique spirituality. The chaplains are of diverse religious background.  Chaplain Eric, ordained in 1974, has served three congregations as their pastor. Chaplain Eric believes every person is precious and unique. He helps to foster the environment at Hanover Hospital, where, along with the best medical care possible, all are treated with honor, compassion, and respect.

The Chaplain can be called for:

  • Baptism
  • Care and support in time of acute illness, loneliness, or loss
  • Care and support in times of crisis
  • Conversation in confidence about end-of-life issues and other religious and/ethical concerns
  • Conversation in confidence about religious or emotional issues such as guilt, shame, fear, anxiety, depression, anger, faith, and beliefs about life and death
  • Holy Communion
  • Information regarding spiritual or religious values of various faith traditions
  • Prayer for peace and healing, before a surgical procedure, for celebration and thanksgiving, or whatever need may be weighing on a person’s heart

To contact the chaplain from within the hospital, ask a staff member to dial extension 6905, or dial 0 on a Hospital phone, and ask for the Chaplain to be paged. If you are outside of the Hospital, dial (717) 316-3711, or toll free (800) 673-2426, and ask for the Chaplain to be paged.

A Hospital chaplain is on call 24 hours a day. Routine visits are made by the chaplains to patients to determine if they would like to be visited by the chaplaincy staff during their stay in the Hospital. The chaplains also respond to specific requests and referrals from the Hospital staff.

Hospital Chapel

The Hospital Chapel is located on the first floor at the top of the ramp beyond Employee Health (the hallway that leads to the Emergency Department from the Main Lobby). It is open 24 hours a day for people of all faiths or no particular faith. Prayers may be written out on paper provided and placed on the altar.
