Certified Nurse Midwife
Hanover Hospital’s Medical Staff/Obstetrics
Department recently added Kimberly Caple,
CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife). She is employed
by Mountain View OB/GYN at 20 North Street,
Hanover. Kimberly has had the privilege of
working in Hanover Hospital for the past 10 years
as a maternity nurse. During that time, she also
delivered both of her children at Hanover Hospital.
Her education as a nurse started at York College
of PA where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree
in nursing. Kim states that she knew that after
graduating in 1995 that she would expand her
career as an advanced practice nurse. She
assumed that this role would be as a nurse
practitioner in women’s health. She received some
encouragement from colleagues, friends and
family, to include midwifery in her training. Kim
reports, “I researched online for a program that
allowed me to work as a maternity nurse, raise
a family and do clinical training locally. I found
University of Cincinnati to be all that I was looking
for. During my two years of training, I worked at
Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, PA, with two
nurse midwives and two nurse practitioners.
I obtained a Master’s degree in nursing with
certification in midwifery and also as a women’s
health nurse practitioner. I started with Mountain
View in October 2008 and have been credentialed
at the hospital since December 2008.”
A nurse midwife has a lot to offer her patients
and her community. Kim explains, “We, as
midwives, promote education and prevention
to our female clients of all ages. My services at
Mountain View include early prenatal teaching,
focusing on diet, exercise, and medication, as
well as identifying risk factors for the pregnancy.
I encourage clients to attend the childbirth and
breastfeeding class offered at Hanover Hospital.
Throughout the course of their pregnancy, I offer
education on what to expect at each stage. I refer
to the physicians for high-risk patients such as
those with pre-eclampsia, pre-term labor, insulin
dependent diabetes in pregnancy, etc.
I feel that midwives offer the best of both worlds to
their clients. I can spend time educating low-risk
clients while identifying and referring the highrisk
client to the appropriate services.” Kim also
practices as a nurse practitioner at Mountain View.
She has clients of varying ages, from teenagers
to post-menopausal. “I focus on health promotion
and disease prevention. I talk a lot about STD
prevention to my young clients, especially with
the promotion of the Guardasil vaccine. I love both
aspects of my job.”
“My favorite role in being a midwife is attending
deliveries. I feel that it is my greatest honor to be
with a mother through her labor and delivery. It
is truly my source of joy to be here at Hanover
Hospital. God has blessed me deeply. My faith and
the patience of my family and friends have carried
me to this point. I owe a lot to them.”

Healthy Pregnancy:
A healthy pregnancy starts before conception. If you are thinking about having a baby, now is the time to prepare your body. You could be pregnant for weeks before you realize it. The first few weeks are a time when it's especially easy for the fetus to be impacted by drugs, alcohol, smoking and lack of nutrients. That's why good health is so important. Read more..

Maternity Classes:
Ready & Waiting/What to Expect is a unique, free service for Moms-to-Be. This service will intiate the admission process and identify special needs prior to the patient presenting for delivery. It is for women in their last month of pregnancy, 36 to 37 weeks. Expecting mothers will meet one-on-one with a member of the Hanover Hospital Maternity staff to initiate admission paperwork, review and sign forms, and policies and procedures pertaining to their child’s birth. This will streamline the “laborious” process of admission when a mom-to-be comes to the hospital already in labor. Appointments are available between 10 a.m. & 7 p.m., seven days a week and last approximately 60 minutes. Participants are encouraged to bring a support person to their appointment.
Each session will cover:
- A brief tour of the Maternity Center
- Completing an extensive medical history and physical
- Hanover Hospital’s admission and cell phone policies
- The visitation policy for before and after birth
- Safety & Security procedures
- Pain relief methods
- Breast vs. bottle feeding
- The importance and safe use of baby car-seats
- Preventing shaken-baby syndrome
