Do you toss and turn all night?  Do you sleep soundly but feel un-refreshed in the morning or tired during the day?  If so, you may be one of the almost 50 million Americans who suffer from a sleep disorder.  Many are unaware of their problem and may only be informed of disturbed sleep by a bed partner.

Some of the varied sleep disorders evaluated at by the Sleep Lab include:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Central sleep apnea
  • Periodic leg movement disorder
  • Narcolepsy
  • Idiopathic hypersomnolence
  • Nocturnal movement disorders or “parasomnias”

Symptoms could include:

  • Disruptive snoring
  • Stopping breathing during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Frequent leg movements during sleep
  • Un-refreshing sleep
  • Acting out of dreams or exaggerated sleep walking behavior

Epworth Sleepiness Scale

Many sleep disorders are associated with excessive daytime sleepiness. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is used to determine the level of daytime sleepiness. A score of 10 or more is considered sleepy. A score of 18 or more is very sleepy.

Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate number for each situation:

0 = would never doze or sleep.

1 = slight chance of dozing or sleeping

2 = moderate chance of dozing or sleeping

3 = high chance of dozing or sleeping
