The goal of pulmonary rehab is to improve physical endurance in order to overcome the conditions that cause shortness of breath and limit capacity for physical exercise and daily activities.

The Hanover Area Coalition for Lung Health was formed in 1999 to increase awareness of COPD in the Hanover Community. Based on the National Lung Health Education Program (www.NLHEP.org), the Coalition has worked to improve public awareness through posters, billboards and community spirometry screenings. Spirometry is the simple breathing test used to detect early COPD. Greater physician awareness of the importance of early detection has been done through education conferences, newsletters and physician-to-physician communication.
