- Eyeglasses, contacts

- Please bring any special equipment you are already using, such as a cane, walker, brace or prosthesis so it may be evaluated by the rehabilitation team.
- Do not bring medications with you. If you bring medication to the rehabilitation center, it will be locked in the medication room and returned to you on your day of discharge.
The First Few Days
During your first few days in the program, you will meet many specialists.
Your doctor, nurse, social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist
and speech-language pathologist will ask you to participate in an evaluation.
This may seem tiring, but the information you give will help the team determine
your ability level. Your treatment program will be based on the information
you provide to the rehabilitation team.
Family Conference
Family conferences may be scheduled with the rehabilitation team to review your progress, rehabilitation goals, and discharge plans. Therapists and nursing staff will teach family members about the rehabilitation philosophy and therapy techniques. Family education days will be scheduled as needed. Please feel free to ask for a family conference from any staff person.
Team Meetings
The rehabilitation team will meet once a week to review your goals and progress.
This will ensure that methods learned in one therapy are practiced in the other
therapies and that your treatment plan is continually updated. You will be playing
an important role in reviewing goals and plans, and the team will be depending
on your input.
Therapy Sessions
A master schedule showing the times of your therapy sessions is posted daily.

Therapeutic Passes (Community Outings)
Passes are considered an important learning tool in your rehabilitation
program. Outings away from the rehab unit may be encouraged so you can practice
your learned therapy techniques.
You may be permitted to leave the hospital for a few hours, but not overnight. Passes are usually only scheduled on weekends so they will not interfere with your therapy time.
The physician and other team members will decide when a pass will be most beneficial
to you. A pass is recommended when your medical condition is stable and your
family is experienced in providing the assistance you require.
When you return from your pass, your nurse will ask you and your family about
your experiences. If you had any problems, the team can plan to help you overcome
them.
The nursing staff can arrange for you to borrow any necessary medical equipment you will need during your time away from the unit. You are responsible for its return.
Patient Safety
Keeping our patients safe is a top priority. For this reason, please respect
the following:
- Ask the nursing staff or therapist for help if you feel dizzy or weak.
- Follow the instructions regarding whether or not you must stay in bed. Please do not attempt to get out of bed by yourself and always request assistance until you are given permission by the therapy staff.
- If you are using a wheelchair, make sure you are safe with transfers. "Buckle up" if you are told to wear a seat belt. Remember that a fall could be a real setback to your progress.
- Alcoholic beverages or un-prescribed medications are not allowed.
- Check with the nursing staff before eating food from friends or family since you may be on a special diet.
- Smoking is not permitted in any area of the hospital.
- Unannounced fire/safety drills occur occasionally throughout the hospital. Patients and visitors are requested to stay in the patient's room with the door closed, or in the therapy area.
- You can easily identify the staff at the Center For Acute Rehabilitative Medicine by their hospital identification badges.
- Please ask a team member before eating foods, which may be limited by a specialist.
