Geriatric Medicine is Specialty of New Medical Practice in Hanover

December 22, 2009 -
The new Hanover Medical Group Adult Medicine, Geriatrics and Infectious Disease practice of  Drs. Oscar Murillo, Moushumi Kundu, Mohammad Bari and Sadia Baqai opened recently at the Hillside Medical Center in Hanover.

The practice specializes in Geriatrics, the branch of medicine that focuses on health promotion and the prevention and treatment of disease and disability in later life.

Geriatricians are medical doctors who are specially trained to prevent and manage the unique and oftentimes multiple health concerns of older adults.  Older persons may react to illness and disease differently than younger adults.  Geriatricians are able to treat older patients, manage multiple disease symptoms, and develop care plans that address the special health care needs of older adults.

A geriatrician is a primary care physician who is board-certified in either Family Practice or Internal Medicine and has also acquired the additional training necessary to obtain the Certificate of Added Qualifications of Geriatric Medicine.  There are approximately 9,000 geriatricians in the U.S.

Regardless of an older person’s age, a geriatrician should be consulted when:

-  Their condition causes considerable impairment and frailty.  These patients tend to be over the age of 75 and coping with a number of diseases and disabilities, including cognitive (mental) problems; or

-  Family members and friends are feeling considerable stress and strain as caregivers.

Hanover Medical Group Adult Medicine, Geriatrics and Infectious Disease is part of the Hanover HealthCare PLUS network.  Drs. Murillo, Bari, Kundu and Baqai are members of the Hanover Hospital Medical Staff.  The office is located in the newly constructed building at Hillside Medical Center, 250 Fame Avenue, Suite 235, in Hanover.

New patients are welcome.  For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call (717) 632-1234.
