Diabetes Self-Management Education Program Earns ADA Recognition

November 23, 2009 -
The Hanover Hospital diabetes self-management education program “The Diabetes Puzzle – Putting it All Together” has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA).  The program was originally recognized in 1990 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who initially granted all certifications.  In 2000 the ADA took over the certification process and Hanover Hospital has been certified by them ever since.

This recognition assures that “The Diabetes Puzzle” has met the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs.  According to studies of healthcare claims, education is proven to help outcomes and notably lower healthcare costs, and prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.

Since 1988 Hanover Hospital has provided a comprehensive Diabetes Education program and services by certified diabetes educators to approximately 600 inpatients and outpatients and their significant others each year.  Over the past 21 years area physicians have referred patients to this program, understanding that an educated patient is a more compliant patient, and compliance is the key in managing diabetes.

Hanover Hospital diabetes management and education programs are provided to individuals of all ages with Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes.   Programs include: “The Diabetes Puzzle – Putting it All Together,” the Diabetes Table Talk” support group and the “Annual Diabetes Dialogue.”
