Hanover Hospital and Hanover YMCA to Offer "Heart-Wise" Education Series
Hanover Hospital and the Hanover Family YMCA have teamed up to offer “Get Heart Wise at the “Y,” a five-class educational series, featuring the latest heart-healthy instruction by Hanover Hospital professionals. The free course is open to Y members and non-members. Weekly classes will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the YMCA, 500 N. George Street, in the Multipurpose Room.
The series will begin on Wednesday, October 31st, with “The Art of a Healthy Heart,” facilitated by Ann Small, RN, BSN, Cardiovascular Nurse. Features: Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), risk factors leading to disease, and how to reduce your risk. This class will be repeated on Wednesday, December 5th.
Subsequent classes include:
“Stroke: What You Need to Know,” -- Wednesday, November 7th. Facilitator: Janet Cutsail, RN, BSN, CCM, BC. Cardiovascular Disease Manager. Features: Why stroke happens, how to reduce your risk for the #1 cause of disability, the effects of stroke and the road to recovery, how to recognize a stroke: F.A.S.T.
“Eat Smart for Your Heart!” -- Wednesday, November 14th. Facilitator: Malorie Lander, RD, LDN, Registered Dietitian. Features: The American Heart Association’s updated nutrition guidelines, good vs. bad fats, how to reduce sodium in your diet, benefits of whole grains, other heart-healthy foods, and recipe makeover (with sampling).
“Stress-Less Express,” – Wednesday, November 21st. Facilitator: Ann Small, RN, BSN, Cardiovascular Nurse. Features: The stress response and how it affects the body, behavioral personality types – what type are you, risk behaviors associated with stress, pointers to help deal with stress, and relaxation exercises.
"What is Your Diabetes IQ?” -- Wednesday, November 28th. Facilitator: Glenda Harmon, RN, CDE, Certified Diabetes Educator. Features: Diabetes and insulin resistance, the risk factors in developing diabetes and how to reduce your risk, the relationship of insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
