Hanover Hospital Offers Heart and Vascular Assessment Program

September 23, 2009 -
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death from heart attacks and the third leading cause of death from strokes.

Hanover Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Program provides a comprehensive assessment of a person’s risk level for developing cardiovascular disease.  The two-part program, offered to individuals, groups and businesses, provides an assessment of the following risk factors:

Blood pressure measurement

Height & weight measurement

Diabetes risk assessment

Cholesterol panel

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Waist measurement

Exercise/diet habits

The program also includes assessment for these risk factors:

Metabolic Syndrome -- a cluster of disorders that predispose an individual to increased risk of cardiovascular disease

Framingham Risk -- a scored risk assessment to determine an individual’s risk of having a heart attack event in 10 years

Atrial Fibrillation -- a common arrhythmia (irregular heart rhythm) that can lead  to stroke.

The first session, conducted by a registered nurse, combines a cardiovascular risk assessment with appropriate physical screening tools to determine the level of risk.  The second session provides a one-on-one interview with the participant to provide individualized results of the findings and a personalized risk assessment. Education on ways to decrease their personal risk for developing cardiovascular disease is also provided. Hanover’s Cardiovascular Medical Director will review every individual’s results and make recommendations that will be privately discussed with each participant by the nurse.
