2007 Hispanic Film Festival Begins September 21st

In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the 2007 Hispanic Film Festival will be presented on four consecutive Friday evenings beginning September 21, at the Hanover Community Health & Education (Wellness) Center, 400 York Street.  Doors open at 7 p.m., and the movie begins at 7:30 p.m.

Though all of the films are meant for adult viewers, two would be suitable for teens as well.  Child care for younger children will be available, and movies for children will be provided.  Admission is free, and is available on a “first come – first served” basis, as seating allows.   Light refreshments will also be provided.

Sponsored once again by Hanover Hospital and coordinated by the local Hanover Juntos-Hanover Together group, the Hispanic Film Festival will present four industry acclaimed movies, set in various Hispanic countries, which will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles, on the following dates:

“A Place in the World” – Sept. 21 –Rating:  PG

A film by Adolfo Aristarain, set in Argentina, “A Place in the World” won an Academy Award nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film in 1993.  It is a critically acclaimed coming-of-age story set within the most exciting and turbulent times in the history of Argentina.

“Pan’s Labyrinth” – Sept. 28 – Rating:  R-Graphic violence and some language

A film by Guillermo del Toro (Blade II, Hellboy), set in Mexico during the Spanish Civil War, “Pan’s Labyrinth” is about a young girl who enters a mysterious labyrinth and finds herself at the center of the ferocious battle between Good and Evil.

“Lovers of the Artic Circle” – Oct. 5  – Rating:  R-Sexuality and Brief Language

A film by Julio Medem, “Lovers of the Artic Circle” is one of the most acclaimed and beloved Spanish films in recent years.  A beautiful and haunting love story, this groundbreaking film director enchants and delights anyone who believes in the power of love.

"Balseros” – October 12 –Unrated Documentary.

This film by Josep M. Domenech and Carles Bosch is an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature. “Balseros” is the heartrending yet triumphant account of seven Cuban refugees who risked their lives to venture towards American’s shores.  Spanning seven years within their lives, the film mirrors the universal spirit, drama and adventure of the immigrant experience.
