KAZ Campaign Urges Families to Spend Their Summer Outdoors

Hanover Hospital is a sponsor of the Keystone Active Zone (KAZ) campaign, initiated by the Health York County Coalition (HYCC).  KAZ encourages children ages five to 12 and their families to be physically active by taking advantage of parks, trails, recreational facilities and outdoor programs in York County.  The campaign will run from June through September.

Children are invited to join the KAZ Kids program now.  As members, they will receive a KAZ Passport in which they can track their activities throughout the summer.  Each child will also receive a sports bag and be eligible for prizes when their passports are completed.  Rutter’s Farm Stores has agreed to distribute 5,000 passports at its 43 locations.  In Hanover, passports can be picked up at the Rutter’s stores at:  661 Broadway, 891 York Street, and 1400 Baltimore Street.

Children and their families can be active together by attending various recreational outdoor events that are being held in York County, such as swimming, skateboarding, canoeing and kayaking, daytime and moonlight boating and biking, an archaeology walk, gold panning and an Astronomical Society public star watch.   For a complete list of events, visit: www.keystoneactivezone.com.

According to Janice Swartz a Hanover Hospital Health Educator and member of the HYCC’s Healthy Lifestyles Task Force, “The KAZ campaign encourages activities for the entire family, which complements are efforts to provide families with resources on good nutrition and physical activity to promote healthy lifestyles and address the obesity epidemic.”

KAZ is part of a statewide initiative sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Department of Health (DOH), and the Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA).
