Pulmonology is the medical study that deals with the lungs and bronchial tubes.

Pulmonologists frequently treat more complex diseases and conditions of the chest, such as pneumonia, asthma, emphysema, or complicated chest infections. Sleep Medicine is the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy and insomnia. Tests for the diagnosis of sleep disorders are performed in the Sleep Center at Hanover Hospital.

Diagnostic Testing

  • Exercise Oximetry – a walking test that checks oxygen levels
  • Exercise Stress Test – a treadmill test that determines function of lungs during exercise
  • Methacholine Challenge – a test for asthma
  • Sleep Oximetry – checks oxygen levels while asleep
  • Spirometry – measures lung capacity and airflow
  • Spirometry with a bronchodilator – checks if lungs improve with medication
  • Total Lung Capacity – measures how easily oxygen travels to your blood

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

A program that teaches patients with lung disease how to achieve an improved level of health and fitness through educational and exercise training classes. The rehabilitation program is customized for each individual according to their specific condition.

Tobacco Cessation

This program teach teaches participants effective ways to quit smoking. Each participant receives a customized quit plan. The following programs are available:

  • Freedom from Smoking – seven-week tobacco cessation program
  • Individual Counseling – face-to-face, and/or telephone counseling
