Hanover Hospital provides the latest Breast Health imaging services within the Women’s Imaging Center. Conveniently located within the Radiology Department on the 1st floor, the Women’s Imaging Center offers professional expertise and cutting edge technology for breast imaging and breast cancer biopsy in an attractive, comfortable suite that has its own registration desk and waiting area


Digital Mammography

GE Digital Mammography is provided in the Women's Imaging Center at Hanover Hospital as well as at South Hanover and Spring Grove. This state-of-the-art technology provides physicians with clear and precise all-digital images. All-digital mammograms offer many advantages for patients, including:

  • Faster, more efficient exams with fewer retakes.
  • Quick turnaround time
  • More comfortable, patient-friendly design and easy wheelchair access.

In addition to Digital Mammography, we offer MRI, and Ultrasound imaging and biopsy. We are also able to perform lymphoscintography in Nuclear Medicine which is used to localize the sentinel (primary) lymph node and can be effective in preventing the need for more extensive surgery.

What To Expect The Day Of Your Mammogram

Patients scheduled at the Hospital, should report directly to the Women’s Imaging Center. If the patient uses a satellite location, she may register at that location 20 minutes prior to the procedure. 

Patients should not use underarm deodorant or body powder prior to the exam. 

Mammogram procedures and Breast Ultrasound procedures take approximately 20-30 minutes. Patients scheduled for a Breast Biopsy should anticipate a 90- minute procedure.

You will be asked to undress above the waist and wear a patient gown, and answer a few brief questions about your medical history and risk factors for breast cancer. The technologist may need to examine your breasts to identify any abnormalities that should be imaged.

The mammography exam is performed with special equipment that enables the radiologist to view the breast tissue on the X-ray image. The mammography technologist will position you in front of the machine. You will be asked to stand for the exam, if possible. Your breast will then be positioned on the mammography equipment, and firm pressure (compression) will be applied. The exam may be a bit uncomfortable, but any discomfort will last for less than one minute while the picture is being taken.

The breast will be X-rayed from above and from the side. Both breasts are X-rayed to compare the images.
