Bone Density Screening

BONE DENSITY SCREENING

What to Expect   |   Locations   |   Resources

Maintaining healthy bones is important, especially for women over age 50.  Osteoporosis causes bones to become fragile and more prone to break.  Left untreated, osteoporosis can progress, without other symptoms, until a bone fracture occurs, usually in the spine, hip, or wrist.

Osteoporosis can be detected before a fracture occurs.  Using a bone densitometer, physicians can measure patient bone density and follow it over time. These tests allow measurements of bone thickness and calcium content. If the patient’s bone density is low, or decreases at an abnormally fast rate, the patient may be at risk for osteoporosis.  Through changes in diet, exercise habits and/or medication, further deterioration of bone can be prevented.

Hanover Hospital offers Bone Density Screening, featuring the GE Lunar Bone Densitometer, which measures the density of the spine, hip, and forearm – the most frequent sites of fracture – with highly accurate and precise results. Radiation exposure is minimal.

What to Expect

Patients will be asked to provide a brief medical history. The bone density screening takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. No additional preparation is required.
