The Simulation Lab at Hanover Hospital
The Simulation Lab is a great tool for new nurses (and not-so-new nurses!) to practice new techniques or brush up on their current skills. Mega Code Kelly is a full-body manikin with legs and realistic anatomy who is currently the permanent patient in the Simulation Lab (Sim Lab).
Jeanine Albin, a clinical educator at Hanover Hospital, points out that health care is changing rapidly with new advances and innovative technologies. It is difficult for even the experienced nurse to keep up, much less new graduates. Clinical information is provided in nursing school, but there is little time to synthesize the information and practice skill sets such as critical thinking and problem solving. The Sim Lab is allowing the graduate nurse to apply knowledge, practice skills and use critical thinking and problem solving in a controlled and safe environment. This gives the new nurse time to synthesize their knowledge while practicing in a nurturing environment, which increases self-confidence and satisfaction and decreases the likelihood of turnover.
