Bone Densitometry -
A Bone Densitometry procedure or DEXA Scan is a procedure that measures a patient’s bone density. This procedure is used to detect osteoporosis.
Patients should arrive at the facility 20 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment to register. The Bone Densitometry Procedure does not require any prior patient preparation. The procedure will take approximately 10 minutes. Official reports are delivered to the ordering physician’s office within 2-3 business days.
CT Scan -
CT Scans, Computed Tomography Scans provide image data from different angles around the body and uses computer processing of the information to show a cross-section of body tissues and organs. CT imaging is particularly useful because it assists in the diagnosis of cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders. Patients will be contacted at least 24 hours prior to their exam to remind them of their appointment time and to question them regarding any allergies.
Patients scheduled for a CT Scan at the Hospital should register at Outpatient Registration prior to coming to the Imaging Services Department. Patients scheduled at Hillside should arrive 20 minutes prior to the scan and will register at the Imaging Services suite. Most CT Scan procedures take approximately 15 minutes.
Depending upon the diagnosis and the patient’s age, a physician may request contrast. Physicians are asked to determine if the patient has any allergies. Pre-medication and/or lab work may be necessary prior to the exam. Official reports are delivered to the ordering physician’s office within 2-3 business days. Interpretations of STAT reports will be relayed directly to the ordering physician by the Radiologist or a designated staff member.
Diagnostic X-Ray -
X-Ray is the most frequently used form of medical imaging. X-Ray imaging is the fastest and easiest way for a physician to view and assess broken bones, joint or spine injuries.
Patients who come to the Hospital for x-rays must register at Outpatient Registration prior to coming to the Imaging Services Department. Patients using a satellite location will register at that location. Official reports are delivered to the ordering physician’s office within 2-3 business days. Interpretations of STAT reports will be relayed directly to the ordering physician by the Radiologist or a designated staff member. The length of time for an x-ray will vary depending upon the type of x-ray being done.
Fluoroscopic Procedures -
Hanover Hospital offers the following Fluoroscopic Procedures:
- Barium Enema with or without air contrast
- Small Bowel Series
- Swallowing Function *
- Upper GI Series
*Modified Swallowing procedures are scheduled through Hanover Hospital's Speech Therapy Department (717) 633-2156. Patients scheduled for a Fluoroscopic Procedure at the Hospital should register at Outpatient Registration prior to coming to the Imaging Services
Department. Patients scheduled at Hillside should arrive 20 minutes prior to the scan and will register at the Imaging Services suite. Official reports are delivered to the ordering physician’s office within 2-3 business days. Interpretations of STAT reports will be relayed directly to the ordering physician by the Radiologist or a designated staff member. The length of time for Fluoroscopic Procedures may vary. Patients undergoing a Small Bowel Series should expect a 3-4 hour time period to complete the procedure. Patients should carefully follow their physician’s instructions on procedure preparations.
Interventional Procedures -
Hanover Hospital performs numerous special invasive procedures. The following procedures are provided at Hanover Hospital:
- Hysterosalpingogram
- IVP
- PICC Line
- Voiding Cystourethrogram
- Venogam
- Myelogram

Mammography -
Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system for the examination of breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms and to detect and diagnose breast disease. Hanover Hospital Mammography images are complimented by the R2 Computer Aided Detection System. Diagnostic mammograms are done only at Women's Imaging. Screening mammograms are offered at Women's Imaging, Hillside and Thistle Hill.
Patients scheduled at the Hospital, should report directly to the Women’s Imaging Center. If the patient uses a satellite location, they may register at that location 20 minutes prior to the procedure. Patients should not use underarm deodorant or body powder prior to the exam. Mammogram procedures and Breast Ultrasound procedures take approximately 20-30 minutes. Patients scheduled for a Breast Biopsy should anticipate a 90-minute procedure. Official reports are delivered to the ordering physician’s office within 2-3 business days. Interpretations of STAT reports will be relayed directly to the ordering physician by the Radiologist or a designated staff member.
MRI - Closed Bore - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses radio waves and a strong magnetic to provide detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. The parts of the musculoskeletal system that are most frequently imaged with MRI are the spine, knee and shoulder. MRI has also been used to study joints in the body including the hips, wrists, and hands.
Patients scheduled for a Closed MRI at Hanover Hospital must register at Out Patient Registration prior to coming to the Imaging Services Department. Patients will receive procedure preparations from the ordering physician. Most MRI procedures last one hour per procedure. Official reports are delivered to the ordering physician’s office within 2-3 business days. Interpretations of STAT reports will be relayed directly to the ordering physician by the Radiologist or a designated staff member.
MRI - Open Bore -

The parts of the musculoskeletal system that are most frequently imaged with MRI are the spine, knee and shoulder. MRI has also been used to study joints in the body including the hips, wrists, and hands.

Interpretations of STAT reports will be relayed directly to the ordering physician by the Radiologist or a designated staff member. Nuclear Medicine -
Hanover Hospital performs a variety of Nuclear Medicine procedures. Patients should register at Outpatient Registration prior to coming to the Imaging Services Department. PET Scan -
Positron Emission Tomography, PET Scans, are performed at Hanover Hospital, however this service is a shared contracted service with Quantum Imaging. Hanover Hospital leases Quantum Imaging the area to provide the service. Patients should register at Out Patient Registration prior to coming to the Imaging Services Department. Patient preparations and length of studies vary according to the study being done. Patients should consult the ordering physician for specific study information. Official reports are delivered to the ordering physician’s office within 2-3 business days. Interpretations of STAT reports will be relayed directly to the ordering physician by the Radiologist or a designated staff member.
Ultrasound -
Ultrasound or Sonography involves the sending of sound waves into the body. Those sound waves are reflected off the internal organs. The reflections are then recorded by special instruments that subsequently create an image.
