Cardiac Rehabilitation:
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was established in 1988 under the guidance of Dr Lawrence Freer. The program has won many accolades through the years.
HanoverHospital achieved accreditation status in 2002 from the American Association of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Cardiac Rehabilitation is a program designed to help the recovering cardiac patient reach and maintain the healthiest lifestyle possible.
Who can benefit from Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Anyone who is recovering from a recent heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, valve surgery, heart transplant, stable angina pectoris and coronary artery angioplasty and/or stent.
Who will be responsible for patient care?
A specially trained Registered Nurse will interview you, review the program and plan a personalized exercise program with you. Our medical advisor will formulate your exercise prescription. Your private physician is in charge of your medical care. He/ she will receive reports on your progress and will be consulted on matters relating to your care.
How is the Cardiac Rehabilitation program structured?
The program is divided into three phases:
Phase I Inpatient Rehabilitation
This takes place during the patient’s acute hospitalization and is aimed at educating the patient about heart disease.
Phase II Outpatient Rehabilitation
This takes place in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. It includes further cardiac teaching and an individualized progressive exercise program. The primary goal is to prepare the patient for Phase III.
Phase III Maintenance Rehabilitation
This is a life-long process consisting of an exercise program to keep the heart muscle conditioned as well as behavior modification to keep risk factors at a minimum. This can be obtained through the Hanover Hospital’s Medical FitnessCenter or other facilities such as the YMCA, YWCA, or Pacesetters (mall walker program).
In what way will I benefit from the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program?
There are three goals of the cardiac program: education enhancement, improved physical capacity, and support.
Education can:
- Increase your knowledge of heart disease
- Identify your coronary risk factors and help you control them.
Exercise can:
- Lower heart rate and blood pressure
- Increase endurance and improve muscle tone
- Provide you with an individualized exercise program to follow
- Improve circulation
- Aid in weight control
- Decrease stress and improve mental outlook
- Help you return to your routine activities
Support can:
- Help you realize you are not alone through friendships with other patients, and with the moral support of the staff.
- Help you develop a sense of well-being and self confidence.
How can I participate in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program?
You may contact the department directly to learn more about the program. Our staff can then contact your doctor for a written referral. Once we receive a referral from your doctor, a cardiac rehab staff member will contact you to arrange an admission interview.
